Tajweed Basics for Beginners: Simple Rules to Keep You on Track

Tajweed Is Not as Difficult as Many Think Tajweed is not as difficult as many people imagine—especially when starting from the correct basics. Begin by learning the articulation points of the letters (where each letter is produced from the lips, tongue, or throat). Then move on to the rules of nun sakinah and tanween (ikhfa, idgham, izhar), as well as the nasal sound (ghunnah) in meem and noon. Next, study the types of elongation (madd): natural and secondary, along with the rules of stopping (waqf) and continuation (wasl). For practical training, take a short passage from a surah and recite it repeatedly with calmness, focusing on the articulation of every letter. Record your recitation and listen back to identify mistakes in pronunciation. Staying connected with a qualified teacher or joining a tajweed circle gives you direct feedback and correction. Keep practicing with short, consistent daily exercises, and you will gradually notice your voice becoming clearer, and your recitation more steady and graceful.
